The first ramble of the New Year sees us in unfamiliar territory, namely the south Birmingham urban area, for a relatively short walk starting at Sarehole Mill, the landmark building and its surrounding open land made famous by its Tolkien connections. The walk will be held on Saturday, 19th January.
It is difficult to describe the best way to get to the starting point as there are so many possibilities but for those who do not know the area, the best way of finding it is to go along the Hagley Road [A456] towards Birmingham city centre and turn right at ‘The Kings Head’ in Bearwood. You will now be on the route of the Birmingham Outer Circle [A4040]. Follow this road through Harborne, Selly Oakand Bourneville [past Cadbury World] and into Cotteridge. Here turn left and after half a mile right, staying on the A4040.
Keep following this road to the south of Kings Heath until you have crossed the A435.
At the first island turn left [still A4040] and then straight across the next island before reaching a third island; here keep straight on onto the B4146, which will take you to Sarehole Mill. If this seems complicated, the car parking area is in Cole Bank Road and its postcode is B13 OBD, so you can find this on your A-
