In the year of the new millennium, St. Hilda’s celebrated its Diamond Jubilee. A brochure giving details of the Celebration Events was circulated throughout the parish. In it, the Vicar, Michael Dunk wrote: ‘Everyone is welcome to join us as we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee Year with a variety of events and services to mark this important anniversary. Our own journey of faith follows in the footsteps of St. Hilda as we make our pilgrimage through the time and in the place that God has given us.’

A Millennium March took place on 10th June when St. Hilda’s joined with its Cluster Churches, St. Mark’s and St. Mary’s to walk round the outside of the three parish boundaries. A Parish Weekend entitled ‘ A Sign of the Times’ , led by former Vicar Matthew Graham, was held at Sneaton Conference Centre in Whitby where St. Hilda lived and worked for many years.

The Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Eucharist took place on 25th June. The Celebrant and preacher was Rt. Rev. Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark. During the service, the Bishop presented awards to three choristers who had served a total of 173 years service. After the service, a yew tree was planted in the church grounds to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee and the Millennium. During the following months, we welcomed as preachers, former vicars and curates, and our celebrations ended with our Patronal Festival Service on 19th November when the Celebrant and preacher was Rt. Rev. Mark Santer, Bishop of Birmingham.
