Celebrating 70 years of worship, faith and life

and looking to the future

June-November 2010

Programme of Events

Dear friends of St Hilda’s

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the foundation of a community of Christians on this site.

There has been a St Hilda’s Church serving Warley Woods since 1907. The first church building was in Rathbone Road. Then, after many years of planning, in June 1940, the then congregation picked up their chairs and walked the half mile or so to their new home. This is the founding story of our church: that we moved home to be closer to the people of Warley as the population grew during the inter-war years.

Our programme of events looks back at our history but also looks forward to our future together as St Hilda’s Church seeks to walk closer with God and be closer to the people.

As you will see there are seven key points of celebration planned between June and November. Some celebrate our roots and others reach out to the community we are called to serve. All are marked by a sense of joy and thanksgiving. We are also pleased to welcome back to our church previous Clergy and Readers who have had links with St Hilda’s.

And we are especially grateful that Bishop Tom Butler, the retired Bishop of Southwark, and Bishop David Urquhart, the Bishop of Birmingham, will begin and end our celebrations.

We look forward to seeing you through the year.

Revd. Paul Hinton - Vicar of St Hilda’s

Two Special Events

to start and finish our Anniversary

Music and drama have always been important to St Hilda’s. The church is steeped in a rich choral tradition and has many gifted instrumentalists. In the recent past it also had a history of staging pantomimes and holding immensely enjoyable talent evenings. This year we are pleased to welcome two high quality groups of performers who bring to life and celebrate the transforming power of God through music and drama.

March 31st Riding Lights Theatre Company: ‘The Narrow Road’

7.30pm This acclaimed Christian theatre company is performing a powerful production                      exploring the story of Jesus and his call to us to follow in his footsteps.

Nov 27th New English Orchestra and Singers: An Advent Vigil

7.30pm We welcome for the first time this well-established group of Christian singers and       instrumentalists who perform from the heart. They will help crown this year of celebrations.
